FT: Trump prepares new tariffs on dozens of countries as temporary duties near expiry

21 July 2026 17:33

US President Donald Trump is expected to introduce a new round of tariffs on dozens of countries as early as this week, as temporary global import duties are set to expire, people familiar with the plans told Financial Times.

US officials have prepared options that would allow the administration to impose fresh tariffs after the current 10% global duties expire later this week.

The move follows Trump's announcement on July 20 of a 50% tariff on selected Canadian goods, after previously imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Brazil.

The planned measures come after the US Supreme Court earlier this year struck down the reciprocal tariffs introduced following Trump's "Liberation Day" trade announcement in April 2025.

In response to the ruling, Washington adopted a temporary 10% tariff regime in February. Those measures are due to expire on July 24.

According to the sources, the new tariffs would be introduced following an investigation into alleged forced labour practices, providing a legal basis for the measures without relying on the emergency powers that were invalidated by the Supreme Court.
