Germany’s tightened border checks lead to dramatic fall in illegal crossings

01 October 2025 21:15

Germany has witnessed a marked reduction in unauthorized border crossings since the start of 2025, according to data released by the Federal Police. This development reflects a substantial shift compared to the same timeframe last year, highlighting the impact of reinforced border security measures.

Between January and the end of September 2025, authorities detected 47,552 individuals attempting to enter Germany without valid entry documents. This figure represents a significant decrease from approximately 83,500 cases recorded during the corresponding period in 2024, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Experts attribute this downward trend to the reintroduction of stationary border controls at all nine official land border crossing points, which was initiated in September 2024. The renewed controls have led to intensified inspections and enforcement, resulting in the identification of nearly 56,000 illegal border crossings from September 16, 2024, through September 30, 2025.

Further police statistics reveal that over 37,600 individuals were either denied entry or deported directly at the border checkpoints. Law enforcement also apprehended more than 1,650 individuals suspected of involvement in smuggling activities, as well as around 9,300 persons previously wanted by authorities.
