Trump launches "Mission Genesis" to accelerate AI development in US
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order initiating the federal program Mission Genesis, aimed at reinforcing the country’s technological leadership in artificial intelligence.
The initiative, already compared to the scale of the Manhattan Project, will expand computing power, open access to federal data, and deepen government-private sector collaboration, Caliber.Az reports per NBC News.
Michael Kratsios, the president’s science advisor, has been appointed project head.
The executive order states, “The Genesis Mission will dramatically accelerate scientific discovery, strengthen national security, secure energy dominance, enhance workforce productivity, and multiply the return on taxpayer investment into research and development.”
A central component will be the creation of the American Science and Security Platform, led by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, to centralise infrastructure and provide researchers with advanced resources.
Mission Genesis will leverage the largest federal datasets to train scientific AI models.
Within 90 days, the Department of Energy must identify required resources, and within 270 days, AI will be applied to priority areas such as robotics, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and nuclear research.
The program builds on the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) infrastructure, uniting dozens of federal agencies and leading tech companies.
The NAIRR was established in 2020 under the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act to create a shared, advanced research infrastructure aimed at accelerating AI development and innovation.
Initially launched as a pilot program, NAIRR brought together a coalition of federal agencies—including the Department of Defense, NASA, and the National Institutes of Health—alongside private organisations such as OpenAI, Google, and Palantir, to foster a nationwide AI research community.
