Trump sends letter to Iran’s leadership, urges return to nuclear talks

07 March 2025 17:26

In an exclusive interview with Fox Business on March 7, President Donald Trump revealed that he has taken direct diplomatic action regarding Iran's nuclear program by sending a letter to its leadership.

Trump expressed hope that the communication would encourage Iran to return to negotiations on peacefully dismantling its nuclear program.

"I said I hope you're going to negotiate because it's going to be a lot better for Iran," Trump stated in the interview. "I think they want to get that letter. The other alternative is we have to do something because you can't let another nuclear weapon."

While Trump acknowledged that he had communicated directly with Iran’s leadership, the White House has declined to clarify whether the letter was addressed to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Khamenei has previously rejected re-entering talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which has largely unravelled in recent years after both the US and Iran failed to abide by its terms.

Iran holds Trump responsible for the collapse of the deal after he unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018 during his first term, re-imposing severe US sanctions. These actions led to Iran's increasing isolation as other nations bowed to the pressure of American punitive measures.

Trump's comments come amid ongoing global concerns over Iran's nuclear program and the growing tensions in the Middle East. Although he did not disclose the specific contents of the letter, his direct approach follows his earlier statements that he would apply the "Maximum Pressure" policy, a strategy he utilized during his first term to deal with Iran.

Recent reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have further raised alarms about Iran’s nuclear activities. According to the IAEA’s latest findings, if Iran decides to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels (90% purity) instead of its current 60% enrichment, it could rapidly produce enough material for four to five nuclear weapons within about one month, as noted by the Institute for Science and International Security.
