Al-Sharaa meets US envoy in Damascus as Trump moves to end Syria’s terror designation
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa met U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barrack on May 29 at the People’s Palace in Damascus, marking the first official U.S. visit since Washington lifted sanctions and Syria formed its new government.
During the high-profile meeting, Barrack announced that President Donald Trump plans to remove Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism soon, Caliber.Az reports per Syrian media.
He described the move as part of Washington’s broader goal of supporting the current government in Damascus.
Speaking after talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, Barrack said that the U.S. military has "brilliantly" completed 99% of its mission against ISIS in Syria.
He added that the U.S. Congress continues to back Trump’s efforts, particularly those aimed at fostering political and security stability in the war-torn nation, according to Reuters.
On regional diplomacy, Barrack characterised Syrian-Israeli relations as a "solvable issue," but stressed that "the solution begins with dialogue."
He reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to advancing peace between Syria and Israel as part of its new regional strategy.
