EU Commission chief: Greenlanders can count on us
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reaffirmed the EU’s support for Greenland, underlining the importance of Arctic security for the bloc.
On January 14, speaking at a press conference in Brussels, von der Leyen said the EU maintains a strong relationship with Greenland and respects the interests and wishes of its people, Caliber.Az reports via British media.
“We respect the wishes of the Greenlanders and their interests, and they can count on us,” she said.
The Trump administration is set to hold crunch talks with Greenlandic and Danish officials on January 14, as the U.S. president continues to push for control of Greenland. Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt and Denmark’s Lars Løkke Rasmussen will meet Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.
The talks follow a joint statement by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who asserted that Greenland would remain under Danish sovereignty if forced to choose.
Nielsen said, “We choose Denmark,” while Frederiksen described the pressure from the U.S. as “completely unacceptable,” warning that the hardest part was still ahead.
Trump has described Greenland as strategically vital “from the standpoint of national security,” adding that the U.S. would take control “one way or the other,” even at the cost of NATO relations. Analysts warn that failure to resolve the crisis could threaten NATO cohesion.
