Macron warns of unseen “knock-on effects” should US breach Greenland’s sovereignty
French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken of "unprecedented knock-on effects" should the sovereignty of a European country and ally be affected, as could be the case in the perceived threat against Greenland.
The leader made those remarks on January 14 during a cabinet meeting, referring to the US President Donald Trump's push to take control of the Arctic territory, Caliber.Az reports citing Reuters.
The French president is said to have warned that France did "not underestimate statements on Greenland," according to the government spokesperson Maud Bregeon.
"If the sovereignty of a European country and ally were to be affected, the knock-on effects would be unprecedented. France is monitoring the situation very closely and will act in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty," Macron added.
His comments come on the heels of the French Foreign Minister's announcement on the same day that Paris will open a consulate in Greenland on February 6, calling the move a "political signal" over the strategic Danish territory. This revelation came amid the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers set to meet with US Vice President JD Vance at the White House later during the day.
