Trump tells Denmark to “get out” of Greenland
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Denmark should immediately “get out” of Greenland.
“NATO: Tell Denmark to get them out of here, NOW! Two dogsleds won’t do it! Only the USA can!!! Danish intel warned last year about Russian and Chinese military goals toward Greenland and Arctic,” Caliber.Az cites him as saying.
Trump shared a link to an article by Just the News, which reported that Danish intelligence had warned in 2025 about Russian and Chinese military plans in Greenland.
Since returning to the White House in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his long standing interest in the Arctic island of Greenland, a semi autonomous territory of Denmark, raising diplomatic tensions with Copenhagen and allies. Trump argues that Greenland’s strategic location, potential natural resources, and proximity to Russia and China make it essential for U.S. national security. He has repeatedly suggested the United States should acquire or control Greenland “one way or another,” even hinting that anything less would be “unacceptable” and that NATO would be stronger with Greenland under U.S. control. Trump also didn’t rule out US military intervention for the takeover.
In response, Denmark’s government and Greenlandic leaders have firmly rejected any notion of selling or relinquishing the territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen have stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that its defence should be conducted through NATO and existing alliances.
Diplomatically, tensions have led to high‑level talks: on January 14, 2026, Denmark’s and Greenland’s foreign ministers were scheduled to meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington to try to de‑escalate the situation and underline respect for international law and sovereignty.
Earlier today, January 14, the Danish Ministry of Defence reportedly deployed an advanced military unit and defence equipment to Greenland, in an effort to protect the island amid potential US military intervention.
