Media: Denmark deploys military forces to Greenland Amid US control takeover threats
The Danish Ministry of Defence has deployed an advanced unit and military equipment to Greenland, in an effort to protect the island amid potential US military intervention.
The deployed personnel will prepare for the arrival of larger forces from the Danish army and other units of the Ministry of Defence, Caliber.Az reports, citing Danish media.
Danmarks Radio published photos of a Danish Defence Challenger aircraft that landed in Nuuk. However, the Royal Danish Armed Forces command has not yet commented on the deployment.
“We are moving forward on establishing a more permanent and larger-scale presence in Greenland by the Danish Ministry of Defence, including participation from other countries,” said Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen after a meeting of the Foreign Policy Committee, also noting that NATO exercises are scheduled to take place in Greenland in 2026.
For the record, Denmark's deployment is a direct response to escalating geopolitical pressures in the Arctic, primarily driven by repeated statements from U.S. President Donald Trump that the United States must acquire or control Greenland for national security reasons.
Trump described Greenland as vital to prevent Russian and Chinese influence in the region, citing its strategic location guarding Arctic shipping routes, untapped critical minerals, and broader Arctic militarisation by adversaries.
