Germany to fund long-range missiles for Ukraine in new €5 billion support package
Germany has pledged around €5 billion in additional military support to Ukraine, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov in Berlin.
The visit coincides with a surge in Russian drone attacks across Ukraine, described by officials in Kyiv as the most intense since the start of the full-scale invasion, Caliber.az reports, citing German media.
The newly signed agreements include direct German funding for the production of long-range weapons in Ukraine and a contract between the Ukrainian government and German defence firm Diehl for the delivery of air defence systems and ammunition.
Support for Ukrainian arms production
Under the deal, Germany will help finance the domestic production of long-range weapons systems in Ukraine. According to both ministers, this initiative aims to tap into Ukraine’s existing technical expertise and production capacity, which has remained underutilised during the conflict. The first of these systems is expected to be deployed within weeks, as they are already in service and require no additional training.
The agreement forms part of Berlin’s broader strategy to increase direct investment in Ukraine’s defence industry. Speaking at the Ministry of Defence in Berlin, Pistorius reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, while noting the challenging security environment on the ground.
Expanded military deliveries
Germany will also continue supplying munitions, building on existing commitments for 2025. Additional deliveries will include artillery rounds, munitions for air defence systems, and a range of land-based and handheld weapons.
During the visit, Umerov and representatives from Diehl signed a contract for new air defence equipment, in the presence of Pistorius. German officials said the deal is intended to help bolster Ukraine’s air defence as attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets continue.
Enhancing resilience and military operations
As part of the broader package, Germany will support the construction of maintenance and repair facilities within Ukraine. A joint venture between German and Ukrainian defence companies will be established to oversee the initiative, aimed at improving the sustainability of Ukraine’s military operations.
The funding also covers satellite communications, following an earlier commitment in April. Berlin confirmed that the financial support has now been allocated, ensuring the continued operation of secure communication systems for Ukraine’s armed forces. Additional assistance will be provided for medical equipment, which will be sourced from Ukrainian suppliers.
A long-term approach to defence cooperation
The total aid package, valued at approximately €5 billion, is drawn from funds previously approved by the German Bundestag. According to the government, the combination of industrial cooperation and financial investment reflects a shift towards longer-term planning in its support for Ukraine.
Germany’s approach also includes efforts to build wider international backing. Pistorius, together with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, is expected to engage with partner countries to promote greater coordination, particularly in air defence. Building on the earlier “Immediate Action on Air Defence” initiative, which raised around €1 billion, Berlin is proposing a new, ongoing framework under the banner “Enduring Action on Air Defence”.
Officials say the aim is to establish a more consistent and collaborative effort among Ukraine’s international partners to address evolving security needs.
