Israel weighs new US-backed Gaza ceasefire proposal with hostage release plan

29 May 2025 17:34

Israel has received a new ceasefire proposal from Steven Witkoff, the special envoy of the US President, aimed at de-escalating the conflict in Gaza.

According to a report by Israeli news outlet Ynet, the plan calls for an immediate 60-day cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, paired with the phased release of hostages held by Hamas, Caliber.Az reports.

During the first week of the proposed truce, Hamas would release 10 hostages in two stages. In addition, the group is expected to transfer the remains of 18 deceased hostages to Israel. In return, Israel would free Palestinian prisoners based on lists that have already been agreed upon.

The proposal also includes provisions for the resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza, coordinated through the United Nations and other international agencies.

Throughout the 60-day truce, both sides would engage in negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement to end the war. If consensus is achieved during this period, all remaining hostages will be released. If not, the proposal allows Israel to resume military operations in Gaza. There is also an option to extend the truce and continue negotiations in exchange for the release of additional hostages.

According to Ynet, Israel received the Witkoff proposal overnight on May 29 but has yet to issue an official response. Israeli officials believe Hamas continues to hold 58 hostages in Gaza, of whom 20 are thought to be alive.
