Trump voices frustration with NATO, accuses allies of not doing enough for US
US President Donald Trump voiced his disappointment with NATO, arguing that Washington pays excessively large sums to ensure the security of the alliance’s members.
Speaking during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the alliance’s summit in Ankara, Trump criticised what he described as an unfair burden on the United States, saying Washington spends billions of dollars more to maintain the alliance’s security.
He claimed that while the US backs NATO allies, they do little for Washington in return.
Trump’s remarks come as thousands of US troops remain deployed across Europe as part of Washington’s security presence that has underpinned NATO’s collective defence for decades.
The president also reiterated his interest in bringing Greenland under US control, despite the island being an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally.
