Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Bureau alleges possible SBU surveillance operation
A listening device has been discovered in the apartment of a senior detective at Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU).
The bureau said the device may have been installed by officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), while an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway.
“Currently, all circumstances of the incident are being clarified and the individuals involved in the installation of this equipment are being identified,” NABU said in a statement.
According to the bureau, the owner of the apartment above the NABU official’s residence reported that individuals presenting themselves as law enforcement officers had approached him, claiming that a Russian spy was living in the apartment below. NABU detectives later identified one of the men involved as an active-duty SBU officer.
The detective whose home was targeted is reportedly involved in several high-profile investigations, including cases related to corruption in the customs sector, as well as alleged misconduct involving law enforcement officials and state-owned enterprises.
NABU stressed that any unlawful attempts to collect information on its employees are unacceptable and could undermine the independence and effectiveness of anti-corruption investigations.
