UN deputy chief commends President Aliyev's leadership in organising COP29 During a meeting in Baku

On October 9, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General.

During the meeting, Amina Mohammed conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to President Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani president's press service. 

The Azerbaijani leader expressed gratitude for the greetings and extended his own to Guterres, stating he would be pleased to welcome the Secretary-General during the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan.

Amina Mohammed commended President Aliyev's leadership in organizing COP29 and expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between UN agencies and Azerbaijan in advancing the COP agenda. She emphasized the well-established ties with the Azerbaijani authorities.

Furthermore, Mohammed positively acknowledged Azerbaijan's commitment to the Pact for the Future and highlighted the country's achievements in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

President Aliyev expressed contentment with Azerbaijan's cooperation with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and other UN bodies in preparation for COP29. He noted Azerbaijan's longstanding active role on the international stage and its collaboration with various organizations, including the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the European Union, as well as strategic partnership agreements with several European countries.

Aliyev remarked that these efforts create a favourable environment for the successful hosting of COP29 in Azerbaijan and added that the country is working towards achieving consensus on climate-related issues.

Touching upon the "triple" format, President Aliyev mentioned that Azerbaijan is actively collaborating with the United Arab Emirates, which hosted COP28, and Brazil, which will host COP30.
