UN labels 2023 summer as "hottest ever recorded"
The summer of 2023 has been officially labeled by the UN to be the hottest one ever recorded.
According to the UN's weather agency, July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded, by a large margin, followed only by August of this year.
The UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) together with the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service warned, that "the southern hemisphere Antarctic sea ice extent was literally off the charts, and the global sea surface temperature was once again at a new record".
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commented on these findings, stating, that our planet has just endured a season of simmering and warned against the "climate breakdown".
Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said that 2023 was the second warmest year on record, according to eight-month data already.
