UN Security Council to consider Palestinian membership

07 April 2024 12:32

The UN Security Council intends to consider Palestine's application to join the UN as a full participant.

A closed meeting of the UN Security Council is scheduled for April 8. Palestine's request for membership in the international organisation will be discussed at that meeting, Lenta.ru reports citing TASS.

“Consultations will be held at 18:00 [GMT+4] to discuss the Palestinian request to resume consideration of its application for UN membership,” a statement issued by Malta’s Permanent Mission to the UN says.

Presently, Palestine has permanent observer status. Palestine applied to join the UN in 2011, but later decided to temporarily postpone this issue.

Malta’s Permanent Mission noted that the process of sending Palestine's application to the UN Security Council Committee on Admission of New Members will be discussed at the meeting on April 8. The UN General Assembly can admit Palestine to the UN.

Nine out of 15 members of the UN Security Council must vote for the application if none of the permanent members (Russia, China, France, UK and the US) is against it.
