UNHCR records close to 8 million Ukrainian refugees in Europe

The latest update in the Refugee Data Portal for December 20 on the situation in Ukraine by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recorded that a total of 7,863,339 Ukrainians have so far left the country and crossed into Europe.

According to the UNHCR portal, this number reflects the number of people that crosses the Ukrainian border into Europe since the onset of Russia's aggression on February 24.

Out of them, 4,862,561 people have registered for some sort of national protective scheme in the country that they now reside.

As stated in the report, the largest number of people have crossed into Russia (2,852,935) which does mainly include people that have been deported to the country under the organization of Russian state agencies in the course of offense operations on various Ukrainian territories, according to DW.

Poland and Germany continue to rank highest in their total volume of Ukrainians welcomed since February, with 1,544,074 and 1,021,667 respectively. Following them are the Czech Republic (472,473), Italy (166,467), Spain (158,789), UK (150,600), France (118,994), Slovakia (104,140) and Romania (103,167).
