Car rams crowd outside northern France bar, one dead, five injured
A deadly incident occurred outside a bar in Évreux, Normandy, on the morning of August 30 when a man drove a car into a crowd following a dispute, killing one person and injuring five others, prosecutors said.
The attack took place around 4 a.m. local time, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into homicide and attempted homicide, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Prosecutors have ruled out terrorism as a motive, and police have taken two men and a woman into custody.
Rémi Coutin, the local prosecutor, described the toll as “very heavy,” noting that two of the injured were in critical condition.
The incident reportedly began after an altercation between a young woman and several men, as bar staff were escorting customers outside.
The confrontation escalated, culminating in a man deliberately reversing a vehicle at high speed into the gathered crowd, according to investigators.
Évreux Mayor Guy Lefrand confirmed the incident on social media, stating: “A fight broke out, causing a crowd to erupt, and a vehicle struck several people.”
He expressed condolences to the victims and their families, adding that emergency services and police responded promptly and that calm had been restored. Lefrand emphasised that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
