Lynching, boycott and deepening anti-Muslim divide in India's Jharkhand Modi’s party under fire

19 August 2026 12:55

A fact-finding investigation by civil rights activists has accused leaders of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fueling communal tensions following the lynching of a Muslim man in the eastern state of Jharkhand, with Hindu residents subsequently imposing an economic boycott on Muslims, according to findings reported by Muslim Network TV and cited by Caliber.Az.

The investigation found that BJP leaders held gatherings that further polarised the village following the August 4 killing of Imroz Ansari, while local authorities failed to act against inflammatory speeches despite restrictions on public gatherings.

The fact-finding team comprised activists associated with several civil rights organisations, including the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha.

Ansari, a resident of Bargaon village in Chatra district, was beaten to death by a Hindu mob after being accused of kidnapping and raping a minor Dalit girl.

Both the independent fact-finding team and the Jharkhand Minority Commission have since raised questions about the allegations that preceded Ansari’s killing.

The investigators said the accusations against Ansari require a proper investigation but concluded that there were clear indications that his lynching was communal in nature. They said Hindu extremist groups subsequently used the killing to deepen divisions between Hindus and Muslims.

The team identified Vijay Chaube, a former elected village head with links to the BJP, as the alleged leader of the mob. Chaube is described as an influential local figure who has twice headed the village government, while his wife currently holds the position. Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with Ansari’s killing, but Chaube remains at large.

The communal mobilization continued after the lynching.

On Aug. 7, Kisun Das, a former BJP state lawmaker and leader of the party’s Scheduled Caste wing, addressed Hindu residents at a mass gathering in the village.

Video cited by the investigators recorded Das warning that minorities would benefit if they “follow rules” before referring to Ansari’s killing and saying that others could meet the same fate.

The gathering was met with chants of “Jai Shri Ram,” a Hindu religious slogan that has increasingly been used by Hindu extremists during incidents of anti-Muslim intimidation and violence.

Two days later, senior BJP leader Babulal Marandi and other party politicians addressed another gathering. According to the fact-finding team, the meetings served to widen the communal divide rather than ease tensions following the killing.

The investigation also documented an economic boycott targeting Muslim residents. Hindu vegetable sellers and shopkeepers have reportedly refused to sell goods to Muslims, leaving members of the community facing economic isolation.

Such collective boycotts have increasingly been used as a form of anti-Muslim mobilisation in parts of India, imposing economic pressure on entire communities in response to incidents involving individual members.

The investigators also questioned the circumstances surrounding the allegations that preceded the lynching.

After visiting the homes of Ansari and the girl, the team said their proximity and physical layout made aspects of the alleged abduction difficult to reconcile with the account presented against Ansari. Nevertheless, a criminal case was registered against Ansari and his parents.

The fact-finding team also accused police of serious failures both before and after the killing. According to the investigators, officers were informed that the girl was missing a day before Ansari was lynched but did not immediately visit the village to investigate.

The findings have therefore raised broader questions not only about the allegations that preceded Ansari’s death, but also about the role of political mobilisation, official inaction and economic pressure in deepening communal tensions after the killing.
