US, China deepen climate cooperation ahead of COP29
On September 4-6, 2024, China hosted the US-China Working Group on Enhancing Climate Action in the 2020s, co-led by US Senior Advisor for International Climate Policy, John Podesta, and China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin.
The meeting focused on advancing climate action, including the implementation of the countries' 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and preparation for 2035 NDCs, Caliber.Az reports, citing the website of the US Embassy in China.
The discussions spanned key areas, such as energy transition, methane reduction, circular economy, resource efficiency, and fostering low-carbon initiatives in provinces and cities. Both sides praised the progress of ongoing technical and policy exchanges and reaffirmed their commitment to further dialogue.
Additionally, Podesta and Liu attended the US-China Circular Economy Cooperation Forum and US-China Subnational Climate Action Roundtable, highlighting subnational efforts and bilateral cooperation.
The two nations also confirmed their plans to co-host, alongside the Azerbaijan COP29 Presidency, a Methane and Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Summit at COP29, aiming to enhance global cooperation on reducing emissions. Both sides expressed their support for Azerbaijan's COP29 leadership and emphasized joint efforts to address global challenges, including forest conservation and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
