US deploys B-1B bomber in joint military exercise with South Korea
The Republic of Korea and United States Air Forces have carried out joint drills involving an American B-1B strategic bomber, according to South Korea’s KBS television channel, citing the country’s defense ministry.
The joint maneuvers were conducted following the deployment of the US bomber in the airspace over the Korean Peninsula. South Korea deployed its F-16 and F-35A fighter jets, while the US contributed F-16 fighters.
According to KBS, the exercises were intended to showcase the deterrence capabilities of both countries amid the ongoing development of North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs. The drills also aimed to enhance coordination between the South Korean and US military forces.
Similar exercises involving the B-1B bomber were held on February 20.
That round of drills featured the South Korean B-1B bomber, F-35A and F-15K fighter jets, along with the US F-16 multirole fighter.
The purpose of these exercises, the report notes, is to demonstrate deterrence capabilities “against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats” and to strengthen military cooperation between the two allies.
Earlier, on Tuesday, February 11, South Korean and US troops conducted large-scale military drills 30 kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates South and North Korea, aimed at improving their joint operational capabilities.
