US Vice President Kamala Harris plans to address major funders
Vice President Kamala Harris addressed about 300 top Democratic donors on July 19, seeking to reassure them about President Biden's campaign.
Amid widespread Democratic unease, Harris is seen as a potential replacement for Biden as the nominee, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
However, some attendees found the meeting unhelpful and condescending, feeling Harris overlooked their concerns about Biden's leadership.
Harris faces a delicate balance: showing loyalty to Biden while being ready to lead if needed.
"I want to share something deeply felt," Harris reportedly told the donors. "We are going to win this election."
Despite the meeting's organization by Impactual and support from Reid Hoffman, attendees said it provided little reassurance. A campaign official, speaking anonymously, confirmed Harris joined at the White House's request.
During her brief video address, Harris criticized Trump's recent actions and "Project 2025" but mentioned Biden briefly and took no questions.
While some praised Harris's delivery, it did not ease concerns, with some donors voicing reservations about Biden's candidacy beforehand.
Afterward, one group that promoted the call apologized for it.
"The call didn't provide news," said an email from Corridor Partners, advising climate-focused donors. "It urged support for grassroots efforts to oppose Trump."
Before Harris spoke, leaders from groups like Somos Votantes worried Biden discussions hurt their efforts. They argued elite opinions didn't match voter concerns on economic issues, echoing attendees.
After Harris spoke, three heard one unmuted caller call the entire call "ludicrous."
