Madagascar security opens fire on drones tracking president’s motorcade
Madagascar’s presidential security detail opened fire on two unidentified drones that were reportedly tracking President Michael Randrianirina’s motorcade, according to the president’s press office.
Officials said the drones were spotted following the motorcade during a movement on Friday. Security personnel engaged the drones with gunfire, but both were able to evade the shots and fly away, Caliber.Az reports.
Despite the incident, the president’s convoy arrived safely at the presidential residence. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the drones and the location from which they were launched.
French international broadcaster RFI reported that a separate drone was also observed the previous day, on July 3, allegedly monitoring the president’s motorcade before disappearing.
The incident is not the first of its kind. According to reports, in April, five unidentified drones were detected flying over the presidential residence.
Randrianirina came to power following a coup in Madagascar in October 2025, which took place amid widespread protests across the country.
