Vance denies The Atlantic report on US missile depletion

30 April 2026 09:51

US Vice President JD Vance, on April 29, rejected a report by The Atlantic claiming he had expressed concern over the depletion of US missile stockpiles amid the war with Iran.

Speaking in an interview on The Will Cain Show on Fox News, Vance said he had reviewed the article because it attributed remarks to him that he is “100% certain” he never made, Caliber.Az reports.

He added that much of the report relied on unnamed sources.

“Nobody who actually knows what I think—nobody who is close to me—was speaking to that reporter,” Vance said, adding that the article would have been “completely different” had it relied on people familiar with his views.

Asked whether he has concerns about U.S. military readiness, Vance acknowledged that vigilance is part of his role.

“Of course, I’m concerned about our readiness because that’s my job to be concerned,” the vice president said.

At the same time, Vance expressed confidence in the administration’s national security leadership, highlighting Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, saying they are doing “an amazing job.”

Vance added that he and President Donald Trump remain focused on ensuring military preparedness.

He said the US has a great military and urged people not to believe everything they read, “especially in papers like The Atlantic.”

Earlier, The Atlantic reported that Vance had repeatedly questioned how the Department of Defence was presenting the war in Iran and whether the Pentagon was downplaying what it described as a catastrophic depletion of US missile stockpiles.
