Warsaw, Paris discuss extending nuclear protection across Europe
Poland and France have held their first consultations on nuclear deterrence issues in Paris, as the two countries explore ways to strengthen European security.
The talks involved representatives from the defense and foreign ministries of both nations.
“During the meeting, both delegations focused on Europe’s current security situation. The Group also outlined the scope of further detailed talks and bilateral cooperation aimed at reinforcing security in Poland, France, and the whole of Europe,” the Polish government said in a statement.
The initiative to launch a dialogue on nuclear deterrence was proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron. In March, Macron announced changes to France’s national nuclear doctrine.
Among the proposals under discussion are expanding the arsenals of France’s air force and navy, increasing the number of nuclear warheads, and extending the French nuclear umbrella to cover the whole of Europe.
