Zelenskyy: Ukraine not to recognise US military aid as debt
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine will not recognise military aid previously received from the United States as debt.
Zelenskyy made the statement while commenting on a newly received draft agreement on mineral resources between Ukraine and the U.S., noting that it was significantly different from the previous framework document, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
“We are grateful for the support, but this is not a loan, and we will not allow it to be treated as such,” Zelenskyy said, reaffirming Kyiv’s position that military assistance should not be considered a financial obligation.
The comments come amid concerns over the terms of a new resource agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. According to Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak, the conditions of the deal have worsened for Kyiv following a reported dispute between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump. Zhelezniak, who claims to have reviewed a detailed draft of the agreement, suggested that the shift in terms may be a response to recent tensions between the two leaders.
