British intelligence chief gives disappointing prognosis for war in Ukraine

13 August 2022 12:37

British military intelligence chief Lieutenant General Jim Hockenhull believes Russia's war with Ukraine will be long.

"Russia is сlearly trying to regain strength after significant losses. It also has to redeploy part of its troops from Donbas to the South, where the occupiers are under significant pressure from Ukrainian forces in and around Kherson," RBC-Ukraine quotes him as saying.

But General Hockenhull believes that it is impossible to expect decisive shifts in the South in the coming months.

He says he understands Ukraine's desire to regain territory adding that "there will be counterattacks". He does not believe that both sides will resort to decisive action this year.

Hockenhull stressed that at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the strength of Western unity and Ukrainian resistance exceeded all expectations, as did the failures of the Russian armed forces, whose command, control, and logistics were "poor."

According to him, there is a lack of trust between Russia's political and military classes. He is surprised that Moscow is facing all these problems at the same time.

The head of British military intelligence said that he was keeping a close eye on the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia.

However, he believes that this is unlikely, and the likelihood of use could change if the dynamics on the battlefield change.
