Trump reaffirms support for 30-day Ukraine ceasefire Warns of sanctions for non-compliance

09 May 2025 09:53

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, calling it a “sound option” as fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces continues with no end in sight.

In a post published on Truth Social, Trump emphasised the urgency of halting the conflict and reiterated his readiness to support a peace process, Caliber.Az reports.

“Talks with Russia/Ukraine continue. The U.S. calls for, ideally, a 30-day unconditional ceasefire,” he wrote. “Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations.”

He warned that failure to comply with such a ceasefire would trigger further punitive measures. “If the ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its partners will impose further sanctions,” Trump stated, underlining the role of international pressure in enforcing a potential truce.

Citing the human toll of the war, Trump said: “Thousands of young soldiers are dying on a weekly basis, and everybody should want it to STOP. I do, and the United States of America does, also.”

Positioning himself as a potential mediator, Trump pledged to stay engaged in efforts to bring the conflict to an end. “As President, I will stay committed to securing Peace between Russia and Ukraine, together with the Europeans, and a Lasting Peace it will be!” he wrote.

“This ceasefire must ultimately build toward a Peace Agreement. It can all be done very quickly, and I will be available on a moment’s notice if my services are needed.”

Trump concluded his statement with a direct appeal: “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the United States would no longer fly around the world at short notice to mediate meetings, adding that it was now up to the two parties involved.

"Now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end," he added.

The announcement follows months of stalled diplomacy and suggests growing frustration within the Trump administration, particularly as the war enters its fourth year.

In April, Secretary of State Marco Rubio signalled Washington’s patience was wearing thin, warning that the US could "move on" from ceasefire efforts if no progress was made. "We want to decide in a matter of days whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks," he said.

President Donald Trump, who previously claimed he could end the war “within a day,” echoed that sentiment, saying on 18 April: "If one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say: 'you're foolish, you're fools, you're horrible people,' and we're just going to take a pass."
