Russian leader disappointed by German ex-chancellor’s words about Minsk agreements
Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that he was disappointed with the words of ex-Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel about the Minsk agreements.
During a press conference after the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, he noted that her statements came as a surprise to him, according to Early Bulletins.
“This is disappointing. Frankly, I did not expect to hear this from the former Federal Chancellor, because I have always assumed that the leadership of Germany is sincere with us,” he said.
At the same time, Putin pointed out that Germany was on the side of Ukraine, but it seemed to him that the German leadership “always sincerely sought a settlement on the principles that were achieved within the framework of the Minsk process. It turned out that Kyiv was not going to fulfill these agreements, and other participants in the process were deceiving Moscow, the president added.
We are talking about Merkel’s interview with the Die Zeit newspaper, in which she stated that the Minsk agreements gave Ukraine time to win and become stronger. In her opinion, all participants in the agreements understood that the conflict in Ukraine was only suspended, while the problem remained unresolved.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, stressed that Putin “said from the very beginning that Ukraine was playing for time,” not wanting to fulfill the terms of the Minsk agreements, and called on all countries participating in the agreements to confirm their signatures with actions.
The Minsk agreements were signed after the coup d’état in Ukraine that took place in 2014. The coordination of a set of measures to implement the agreements took place, among other things, with the participation of Angela Merkel.
