Georgian FM reaffirms strategic ties with US, hopes for reset in relations
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili has reaffirmed the importance of the United States as a strategic partner and expressed hope for a reset in bilateral relations under the new US administration.
Speaking on the Imedi LIVE program, Bochorishvili underscored Georgia’s commitment to maintaining its partnership with the United States, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.
“Relations with the United States are important for Georgia. Our decision was not to suspend the strategic partnership. For us, it remains a strategically important partner. It is also important that we have some clarity on how America’s new administration views relations with Georgia,” she said.
Bochorishvili also commented on recent diplomatic contacts, highlighting continued dialogue with American officials.
“I have had multiple communications with the US Ambassador. The latest communication was also attended by a representative from Washington, from the State Department. Of course, the embassy represents the country and its interests, which the Ambassador has repeatedly emphasised. One more thing is important – how much does this embassy and the ambassador contribute to strengthening relations between the two countries?” she stated.
Addressing recent US legislative developments, the Foreign Minister referred to the MEGOBARI Act, which was introduced in the US Congress and is currently under Senate review.
“Unfortunately, up to now, we must acknowledge that although the MEGOBARI Act passed by Congress was named in a way that suggests it does not reflect the official position of the executive branch or the State Department—an interpretation we can accept—it remains the only recent document concerning Georgia that has been reviewed by the United States Congress and is currently pending Senate deliberation,” Bochorishvili said.
“For us, the ‘MEGOBARI Act’ is not a friend act; this is not an act about friendship. We anticipate a strategic partnership, not the one described within the framework of the ‘MEGOBARI Act’ that is envisioned by its creator,” she added.
