Official: Russia–Türkiye deepen economic ties
Cooperation between Russia and Türkiye in the trade and economic sphere is progressing at an accelerating pace, with the construction of Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, highlighted as a particularly significant initiative.
Speaking during a meeting with Fuat Oktay, chairman of the Turkish parliament's commission on international affairs, Leonid Slutsky, head of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), said that bilateral trade turnover between the two countries is gradually increasing, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He expressed confidence that cooperation between Moscow and Ankara would serve as a key driver for future infrastructure-based economic projects. Slutsky noted that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) occupies a special role in this process and emphasised that the first unit of the plant is expected to be completed in the near future.
The Akkuyu NPP, constructed with the participation of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, will be the first facility of its kind in Türkiye. It is designed to include four power units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts. The total cost of the project is estimated at $22 billion.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had earlier announced that test electricity production at the first unit is scheduled to begin by the end of this year.
