Georgia plans $7 billion transport investment to boost Middle Corridor role

Georgia has significant potential to strengthen its role in the Middle Corridor, a trade route linking Europe and Asia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at the International Maritime Forum in Batumi.

Kobakhidze said Georgia had launched a large-scale modernisation of its railway infrastructure and rolling stock, with more than 1 billion lari ($383 million) allocated for the work this year, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media. 

He also said 75% of the construction of the East-West international motorway had been completed.

“By 2032, we plan to attract around $7 billion for the development of key transport and logistics infrastructure,” Kobakhidze said.

According to the prime minister, the plans include doubling railway capacity, cutting freight transit times by half, doubling port capacity and tripling the capacity of international airports.
