Iran threatens retaliation as tensions with Europe rise

Iran will take retaliatory measures in response to the actions of European countries, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said, warning that Tehran will closely assess the conduct of European states.

Speaking at a briefing, Baghaei said Iran formulates its foreign policy positions and actions based on the practical steps taken by other countries, Tasnim reports.

He stressed that Tehran would not tolerate the involvement or assistance of third countries “in military aggression against its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding European countries has been repeatedly and clearly stated — Iran will take retaliatory measures and steps strictly in accordance with the nature of the actions taken by these countries,” Baghaei said.

The spokesman also addressed Iran’s plans to participate in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which is scheduled to open on September 8.

According to Baghaei, Iran intends to attend the session provided the United States issues visas to members of the Iranian delegation in a timely manner.

He said Tehran plans to use the UN General Assembly as a platform to present and clarify its position on key international and regional issues.
