Iran’s president warns IAEA cooperation depends entirely on ending “bias”

10 July 2025 17:34

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that Tehran will only continue cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if the agency addresses what he described as its biased and unprofessional conduct, while also affirming Iran’s readiness to respond decisively to any future aggression.

The statement came during a phone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa on July 9, in which the two leaders discussed recent international developments and bilateral relations, Caliber.Az reports per Tasnim.

Pezeshkian said Iran has a longstanding record of cooperation with the IAEA, but warned that continued engagement depends on an end to what he called “double standards” regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He added that any further hostile actions against the country would be met with a stronger response.

The Iranian president referred to the recent 12-day military escalation involving Iran and said that dialogue efforts were undermined by attacks, which involved both Israel and the United States. He asserted that Iran's response to these attacks prompted calls for a ceasefire and emphasised that Israel could not have acted without US backing.

During the call, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and constructive international dialogue, particularly in the context of the country's new political leadership. He also condemned Israeli actions, accusing the country of contributing to instability in the region.

Addressing European concerns about Iran’s partial suspension of cooperation with the IAEA, Pezeshkian pointed to recent legislation passed by Iran’s parliament, describing it as a response to what Tehran views as the agency’s lack of neutrality and silence over attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. He argued that Iran’s membership in international organisations must be based on mutual benefit and fairness.

In turn, President Costa reaffirmed the European Union’s support for diplomatic efforts and stressed the importance of impartiality in the work of international institutions. He expressed the EU’s willingness to expand dialogue and cooperation with Iran and emphasised respect for the country's history and culture.

Costa also extended condolences for Iranian lives lost in recent hostilities and reiterated the EU's concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He underscored the need to end the conflict, ensure the delivery of aid, and support the rights of the Palestinian people.
