Official: European Parliament launches harsh attack on Georgia
The European Parliament’s statements accusing the October 26 parliamentary elections of being rigged represent a harsh attack on Georgia’s state institutions, according to Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee.
Speaking to Georgian media, Samkharadze condemned the European Parliament’s declaration, which said Georgia would be unable to join the EU unless its authorities abandon their current authoritarian course, Caliber.Az reports.
The statement, posted on social media, expressed support for the Georgian people but refused to recognise the current government and indicated that Georgia’s EU accession process was effectively suspended until “fair elections” are held.
“This is a very crude attack on Georgian institutions. Anyone making such accusations against any Georgian state body must be prepared to prove them, or else apologise,” Samkharadze said.
Earlier, the Central Election Commission voiced concern over claims issued in the name of the European Parliament that labelled the October 26, 2024 parliamentary elections as “falsified.”
The European Parliament recently criticised Georgia’s parliamentary elections held on October 26, 2024, alleging widespread fraud and declaring that the country’s EU accession process is effectively paused until “fair elections” are conducted.
