Meda: Pashinyan seeks political ally for Armenia’s next envoy to Russia

04 September 2026 09:04

Armenian authorities are continuing to look for a candidate to serve as the country's next ambassador to Russia, with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reportedly seeking a political figure capable of addressing sensitive issues in relations with Moscow.

The previous ambassador, Gurgen Arsenyan, failed to meet Pashinyan's expectations, while the prime minister's own efforts to improve Armenian-Russian relations have so far yielded no tangible results, the Zhoghovurd newspaper reported.

According to the publication, Pashinyan wants to send to Moscow not simply a career diplomat but a member of his political team who could engage effectively with the Russian side at various levels and, when necessary, help resolve contentious issues between Yerevan and Moscow.

The choice of ambassador has taken on added significance ahead of Pashinyan's upcoming visit to Moscow, the newspaper noted.

Earlier media reports had identified Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan as a possible candidate for the ambassadorial post.
