Deputy PM: Georgia expecting fair decision from EU
REGION 03 June 2023 - 09:10
Georgian authorities are expecting the only correct and fair decision from the European Union in connection with the granting of candidate status to the country, Georgian Deputy Prime Minister Tea Tsulukiani told Sputnik Georgia.
In June 2022, the European Council recognised the European perspective of Georgia and expressed readiness to give it the status of candidate country for EU membership once 12 conditions are met, including de-oligarchisation, depolarisation, improvement of the media environment, and ensuring the full independence of the judiciary. Ukraine and Moldova were granted candidate status on the same day.
"We will continue to work on implementation of all recommendations and we will wait with a lot of patience for the day when a single and this time fair decision on granting the status to our country will be made in Brussels," Tsulukiani told reporters.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Georgia deserves the candidate status by all criteria.
"We believe with the head held high that this status, which we are striving for, belongs to our people, to our state, in case this assessment is based on criteria. If this assessment will be political, in which case we believe that this status really belongs to the country," Tsulukiani stressed.
