Romania declares measles epidemic An urgent call for vaccination

06 December 2023 11:30

With approximately 2,000 cases of infection identified, the Ministry of Health in Romania has declared a measles epidemic.

The highly contagious measles virus is known to spread rapidly, posing significant health risks, especially to unvaccinated individuals, BNN reports.

This declaration of a measles epidemic points towards a sudden surge in cases above the normal levels, typically inciting a response from health authorities to contain the spread and ensure public safety.

Measles Outbreak Beyond Romanian Borders

On a global scale, the measles outbreak isn’t confined to Romania. Other former Soviet republics are also grappling with a swell in cases. In Kyrgyzstan, the measles outbreak has resulted in the unfortunate demise of two unrelated children, aged 1 and 3, over the last six months. The Health Ministry of Kyrgyzstan reported a total of 1,704 confirmed cases in this year alone. The situation in Russia is even more alarming, with more than 5,000 cases reported. Kazakhstan has reported at least 3,000 cases, while Tajikistan has seen 528 cases since the beginning of the year.

Importance of Vaccination

The Romanian Ministry of Health’s declaration of a measles epidemic underlines the importance of vaccinations in preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. The vaccination coverage for the first dose at the national level is at 78%, and the second dose covers 62% of eligible children. These figures reveal a decreasing trend over the past decade, thereby highlighting the crucial need for increased vaccination efforts.

Health Authorities’ Response

The announcement of an epidemic generally triggers a robust response from health authorities. The efforts to contain the spread and ensure public safety may include measures like issuing public health advisories, initiating vaccination campaigns, and imposing restrictions to limit exposure and transmission. The current measles epidemic in Romania is expected to lead to similar responses from the health authorities.
