UN: Ending global hunger by 2030 now unattainable

19 September 2026 11:48

The UN’s goal of completely eradicating hunger worldwide by 2030 is currently unattainable, according to Oleg Kobyakov, head of the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s liaison office with Russia.

Kobyakov said there had been some progress in reducing global hunger, but not enough to meet the UN’s Zero Hunger target by the deadline, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

“If we recall that humanity, through a decision of the UN General Assembly, set itself the goal of eliminating hunger as a phenomenon by 2030, then it is obvious that this goal is currently unattainable,” he said.

Without taking into account the impact of the conflict in the Middle East, about 512 million people could be experiencing chronic undernourishment by 2030, Kobyakov said.

With the impact of the conflict included, the figure could reach between 510 million and 520 million.

Before the crisis, forecasts suggested that about 503 million people would be experiencing hunger worldwide by the end of the decade, he said.
