Armenian ruling party keeps lashing out at CSTO

03 April 2024 15:57

Deputy Chair of Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defense and Security Affairs Armen Khachatryan has commented on statements by the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) regarding the country’s borders.

"In response to our constant request to the CSTO about where Armenia's borders begin and end and about the fact that when Armenia joined the bloc, in what borders you accepted, the CSTO thought for a long time and, maneuvering in this way, gave some answer," Khachatryan told journalists, Caliber.Az reports.

"To put it mildly, this is not an objective and unacceptable statement. Because Armenia has an internationally recognized border and joined the CSTO with these internationally recognized borders. The CSTO accepted it and now says: let's see where your borders run from. We are not going to draw any new borders. What exists internationally, on the maps of the former Soviet Union, what was recognized in Almaty, and Russia, and all the former states of the Union, these are the borders of Armenia.

Now I'm going to ask the CSTO a question, too. When Armenia joined the bloc, where was its area of responsibility? Did they take only Yerevan under their protection? Maybe they took only Yerevan and have no information about the rest?

The CSTO has already reduced its importance, role and authority so much by such statements that I don't think it is necessary to consider this one," the MP noted.
