German police foil IS terror plot targeting England's Euro 2024 final

German police thwarted a suspected terror plot linked to the Islamic State (IS) just hours before England's Euro 2024 final against Spain.

The operation, conducted in the heart of Berlin's Breitscheidplatz area, targeted an alleged plan to attack the Three Lions fan zone where thousands had gathered in anticipation of the football showdown on July 14, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Special forces moved swiftly to detain three suspects during coordinated raids in nearby Potsdam. The operation was sparked by intelligence indicating an imminent threat, with concerns heightened after surveillance revealed suspicious activities and photographs taken at Breitscheidplatz and a prominent local church.

Authorities disclosed that the detained individuals were already known supporters of IS and were under active surveillance by German security forces. The raids encompassed searches at three different addresses in Potsdam, involving personnel from specialized tactical units.

"The homes of three men were searched at three addresses in Potsdam. Forces from the special task forces were involved in the operation. The measures were carried out in connection with an immediate threat from the Islamist spectrum," Berlin Police spokesperson said.

The operation underscores the ongoing vigilance against terrorism in Germany, particularly in light of previous attacks. Notably, the Breitscheidplatz was the site of a deadly IS-inspired truck attack during a Christmas market in 2016, which claimed 12 lives and injured 56 others.

Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that the suspects had been closely monitored in the days leading up to the football final, which prompted preemptive action by law enforcement. Despite their detention, the suspects have been released pending further investigation into the alleged terror plot.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by Islamist extremism in Europe, prompting continued vigilance and proactive measures by security agencies across the continent.
