Algeria becomes first foreign buyer of Russian Su-57E fighter jets
Algeria has officially confirmed the acquisition of Su-57E fifth-generation fighter jets from Russia, making it the first foreign customer to procure this advanced aircraft.
The announcement was made on Algerian state television, Caliber.Az reports referring to Russian media.
According to reports, Algerian military pilots are currently undergoing specialized training to operate the Su-57 fighters. However, the exact number of jets purchased remains undisclosed.
The initial deliveries of the Russian-built aircraft to Algeria are scheduled for 2025, with multiple sources suggesting that the first batch will arrive by the end of that year.
The deal was previously hinted at by Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheev during the Aero India 2025 exhibition in Bangalore.
He stated that the first export customer for the Su-57 would receive their aircraft within the year, referencing a contract signed at Air Show China 2024 in Zhuhai. However, Mikheev did not officially name Algeria as the buyer at that time.
Currently, the Algerian Air Force operates several Soviet- and Russian-made fighter jets, including the Su-30MKA, MiG-29, and MiG-25. The newly acquired Su-57s are expected to replace the aging MiG-25 fleet, with the possibility of also replacing Su-30MKA aircraft in the future.
Defence industry publications such as Army Recognition and The War Zone suggest that with the arrival of the Su-57, Algeria will possess the most advanced and combat-ready air force in Africa.
