Armenia, Türkiye highly likely to be reconciled, says PM Pashinyan

18 April 2023 13:06

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that there is a great possibility of establishing normal relations with Türkiye.

He made the remarks in the Armenian parliament when presenting a report on the implementation of the government programme, Caliber.Az reports, quoting Armenian media.

"The possibility of normalisation increased due to non-diplomatic and non-political factors - human values - when Armenia logically decided to respond to the devastating earthquake in Türkiye. The latter, in turn, would not have opened the Margara Bridge to our cargoes if it did not believe in our sincerity," Pashinyan said.

In this February, Armenia sent several shipments of humanitarian aid to Türkiye. For the first time in 30 years, the Margara border crossing opened for the passage of Armenian trucks.

The prime minister is convinced that the flags that flew during the Armenian foreign minister's visit to Ankara in February were not mere trappings of protocol, but a statement that hope is being reborn where there is despair.

Pashinyan said that the flags of Armenia and Türkiye flew over the ruins created by the earthquake and the difficult history of relations.

The Armenian prime minister hopes that the border between the countries will soon open and the foundations will be laid for normal relations between the two neighbours. From this viewpoint, an important step will be the implementation of agreements on the crossing of the land border by third-country nationals.
