Moscow: Putin to join Iran-US nuclear talks "when needed"
Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to participate in discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear programme should the situation require it, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on June 6.
“This is a process that is currently ongoing. We are maintaining dialogue with both Tehran and Washington through various channels,” Caliber.Az quotes Peskov as saying per Russian media.
“The President and the Russian side will join the talks as needed.”
Peskov’s remarks come shortly after US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Putin to assist in resolving tensions around Iran’s nuclear ambitions during a recent phone conversation.
According to Iran’s news agency, the fifth round of negotiations between Iranian and US representatives began on May 23 in Rome, aimed at narrowing differences over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
The Iranian delegation is being led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side is represented by US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
On May 21, Araghchi warned that Iran would walk away from the talks if Washington continued to insist on a complete halt to uranium enrichment.
The United States has previously demanded that Tehran abandon its enrichment activities and effectively dismantle its nuclear infrastructure.
