Moldovan president warns Armenia targeted by Russia's strategy to undermine sovereignty
Armenia is increasingly becoming the target of Russia's strategy aimed at weakening its sovereignty and influencing its democratic choices, Moldovan President Maia Sandu has warned.
Speaking at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Sandu said the approach mirrors tactics used elsewhere in the region to exploit internal vulnerabilities and exert external pressure on democratic decision-making. She pointed to developments in Georgia as an example, saying that despite strong public support for democratic values and European integration, the country had been drawn back into Russia’s orbit, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
“I am following developments in Georgia with sadness. Despite the bravery of the Georgian people, who continue to defend democratic values, European aspirations and the right to self-determination, Russia has brought Georgia back into its orbit, reinforcing fears of war and signalling that a wrong choice in the elections would cost peace," she added.
According to Sandu, such pressure has fuelled fears of renewed conflict and sent a signal that electoral outcomes could directly affect peace and stability. She said Armenia is now facing similar challenges as it seeks to protect its sovereignty and determine its own democratic future.
Sandu stressed that Moldova supports Armenia and its people in resisting these pressures and defending democratic institutions.
