Hungary set to appoint first blind minister in historic cabinet shake-up
Hungary’s incoming prime minister Peter Magyar has announced a proposed cabinet lineup that includes a potentially historic appointment, with Vilmos Kátai-Németh set to become the country’s first blind minister.
Magyar announced on the social media platform X that he has nominated Dávid Vitézy for the post of Minister of Transport and Investment, and Vilmos Kátai-Németh to head the Ministry of Social and Family Affairs, Caliber.Az reports.

“I have asked Dávid Vitézy to serve as Minister of Transport and Investment. For the first time in Hungary’s history, a blind Hungarian citizen, Dr Vilmos Kátai-Németh, will lead the Ministry of Social and Family Affairs — including responsibility for accessibility and equal opportunities,” the post by Magyar reads.
According to him, Vitézy has more than 20 years of experience in transport development and urban planning, has worked as a lecturer and consultant in the field, and has contributed to the modernisation of public transport in Budapest. He has been tasked with addressing the crisis in the railway system and implementing a large-scale transport program.
Kátai-Németh is set to become the first blind minister in Hungary’s history. He lost his sight at the age of 16, later earned a law degree, and currently works as a lawyer. Magyar noted that his personal experience would allow him to place particular emphasis on accessibility and equal opportunities.
Kátai-Németh said he intends to focus on supporting families, strengthening social protection systems, improving access to education and healthcare, and enhancing child protection services.
