Armenian embassy confirms closure of Upper Lars checkpoint for trucks Passenger Vehicles Unaffected
The road connecting Georgia to Russia via the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgian-Russian border has been closed to heavy trucks, said Vahan Hakobyan, customs attache of the Armenian Embassy in Russia.
However, the route remains open for passenger vehicles, allowing lighter traffic to continue its passage, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
The Upper Lars checkpoint is currently the only operational land route linking Armenia and Russia through Georgia.
Notably, the Upper Lars checkpoint is a border crossing point located on the Georgian–Russian border, near the town of Vladikavkaz in Russia. It serves as the main gateway for land travel between the two countries, providing access through the Caucasus Mountains.
The checkpoint is strategically important for trade, travel, and transportation, although it is subject to vary levels of traffic and potential closures due to political or security situations.
It is often used by people travelling between Russia and Georgia, including for political or economic reasons. The area is also known for its challenging terrain, which can cause delays, particularly during harsh weather conditions.
