Iranian FM hints at Israeli role in Egypt LNG terminal explosion

31 July 2026 09:25

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has suggested possible Israeli involvement in a recent drone attack targeting the Egyptian port of Damietta, urging vigilance against what he described as potential false-flag operations.

“Egypt is an important friend and partner in the region, and its security is of utmost importance to us.

We must all be vigilant against Israeli plots and false-flag operations designed to undermine regional peace.

The threat is clear, mutual, and fearful of Muslim solidarity,” he wrote on Twitter.

Earlier reports indicated that an explosion occurred at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) transhipment terminal in Damietta while a vessel was being unloaded.

According to a report by The New York Times, the explosion at a US-owned floating LNG storage facility in the port may have been caused by a drone launched from Iran.

Iranian sources cited by the newspaper warned that any further escalation of the conflict could lead to severe disruptions in global energy supplies.

However, the sources did not specify whether the attack was carried out directly by Iran or by one of Tehran’s allied groups.
