Armenian PM doubts Azerbaijan's commitment to peace agreement

02 October 2024 18:40

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Azerbaijan is unlikely to sign a peace agreement with Armenia.

"The constant introduction of new demands indicates that Azerbaijan is not inclined to sign a peace treaty," Pashinyan said during a government session in the parliament, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

He emphasised that this does not alter Armenia's commitment to pursue peace. Earlier, the Armenian prime minister noted that Yerevan and Baku had reached an agreement on 80 per cent of the peace treaty and urged Azerbaijan to sign those provisions.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan also said that Armenia does not see the political will from Azerbaijan to sign the agreed-upon part of the peace agreement.

Mirzoyan made these remarks at the Warsaw Security Forum.

"There is a real opportunity to close the chapter on the conflict in our region between Armenia and Azerbaijan and to open a new chapter of peace and cooperation. However, Azerbaijan refuses to sign this peace agreement, citing new reasons each time. We can see that Azerbaijan simply does not want to sign it. No agreement in the world can address all the issues between the parties; we propose signing this document and then negotiating the remaining issues," he added.

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry previously deemed Armenia's proposal to sign a draft peace agreement while excluding unresolved provisions as unacceptable.

"The call from Armenian officials to sign the draft 'peace agreement,' omitting the unresolved points, along with attempts to defer existing issues in bilateral relations to a later stage, is unacceptable," Spokesman for Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry Aykhan Hajizada said.
