Armenian PM prohibits opposition from reviewing draft peace agreement with Azerbaijan

02 October 2024 21:43

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that he prohibited the opposition from reviewing the draft peace agreement with Azerbaijan.

"I initially allowed the opposition to see the document, but then the opposition started spreading false narratives to our society," he said during a parliamentary session, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Previously, several opposition MPs had reviewed the draft and subsequently made political statements, which led Pashinyan to believe they had misrepresented its content and "manipulated" the information.

The prime minister also refused to publish the document, citing "diplomatic ethics".

He added that the potential agreement includes provisions for "establishing an Armenian-Azerbaijani commission to monitor the implementation of the peace treaty, establishing diplomatic relations, and mutual recognition of territorial integrity".

Earlier, Pashinyan said that Azerbaijan is unlikely to sign a peace agreement with Armenia.

"The constant introduction of new demands indicates that Azerbaijan is not inclined to sign a peace treaty," Pashinyan noted.

He emphasised that this does not alter Armenia's commitment to pursue peace.

The Armenian prime minister also noted that Yerevan and Baku had reached an agreement on 80 per cent of the peace treaty and urged Azerbaijan to sign those provisions.
